Unsubscribing imported contact groups

If you imported a group of unsubscribed or bounced contacts, you will need to unsubscribe them manually after the import. If you have not imported your unsubscribed contacts yet, you first need to associate them with an attribute in the import file so you can unsubscribe them in bulk afterwards. See how in this article.

If your unsubscribed contacts have not been imported yet, you can give them this status during the import: at the Select contact column names step, select Unsubscribed in the Import as menu.

Unsubscribe contacts that are already imported

Once your unsubscribed contacts are imported with an attribute, filter your contact list with the segment you created, “To unsubscribe” or “bounces”: under Audience > Contacts, select this segment from the All contacts drop-down menu in the left-hand column. You will get the list of the contacts you imported under the same attribute.

To change the status of this group of contacts from Active to Unsubscribed, select all the contacts in the resulting list (Select page checks all the contacts on the displayed page), click Actions at the bottom and select Unsubscribe.

Your contacts now have the “Unsubscribed” status.

Note that if, for example, displaying 100 contacts per page gives you a total of 6 pages, you will need to repeat the previous step for all 6 pages (that is, select all the contacts and unsubscribe them on each page).

About “Bounced” contacts

For the same contact list, you need to repeat the entire procedure and name your new attribute based on the imported file, for example “bounces”.

The contacts you import from the bounces list may be automatically recognized as invalid during the import. If so, they will not be imported. The other contacts on this list will need to be unsubscribed.

Good to know

You need to repeat the whole import process for each of your contact lists. For example, if you send bilingual newsletters, you may have a list for each supported language.
