Format your website content with the text editor

Write and format the text, images, links and tables of your articles and custom content zones with the text editor.

Available with the Essentials plan and higher.

The text editor lets you write and format the content of your website: headings, lists, images, links and tables. It works like a word processor and generates the HTML code for you. You see the result as you type, without knowing any code.

Where to find the editor

On your website, the editor appears in:

The same editor is also used in other features, for example the communications sent to your members, donors and participants.

The toolbar

Hover over a button to see its name. The main buttons are:

  • Source: shows and edits the HTML code of the content.
  • Paste as plain text and Paste from Word: paste text copied elsewhere without its formatting.
  • Undo and Redo: fix a mistake.
  • Bold, Italic, Underline, Strikethrough, Subscript and Superscript: format the selected text.
  • Remove Format: removes the styles of the selected text without deleting the text.
  • Numbered and bulleted lists, Decrease Indent and Increase Indent: create lists, including sub-lists.
  • Align Left, Center, Align Right and Justify.
  • Link and Unlink.
  • Image, Table and Insert Horizontal Line.
  • Paragraph Format: applies a heading (Heading 1 to Heading 6) or a normal paragraph.
  • Font Size, Text Color and Background Color.
  • Maximize: shows the editor full screen.

Use Paragraph Format rather than font size for your headings. The text stays consistent with the look of the website and search engines better understand the structure of the page. Use colours and font sizes sparingly to keep the text easy to read.

Paste text without its formatting

Text copied from Word, an email or another website often brings its own formatting (font, colours, spacing), which conflicts with the style of your website.

  • For text from a website or an email, click Paste as plain text.
  • For text from Word, click Paste from Word.
  • If the text is already pasted, select it and click Remove Format.

Add an image

  1. Place the cursor where you want the image, then click Image.
  2. In the Image Properties window, click Browse Server, upload your image or choose an image already there, then double-click it.
  3. Fill in the Alternative Text, which describes the image to screen readers and search engines. Adjust the Width and Alignment if needed, then click OK.

The detailed steps are in the article Add an image with the text editor.

Uploaded images weigh 2 MB at most. An image wider than 1,600 px or taller than 1,200 px is automatically reduced. To prepare your images, see the article Best practices for managing images on your website.

Add a link or a file

  1. Select the text or image to make clickable, then click Link.
  2. In Link Type, choose URL for a web page or E-mail for an email address, then enter the address.
  3. To open the link in a new tab, open the Target tab and choose New Window (_blank).
  4. Click OK.

To offer a document for download (PDF, form, report), see the article Host files and create download links.

Link to a section of a page

A link can lead straight to a specific section of a page, for example to build a table of contents at the top of an FAQ. The link then targets the page zone that holds the section.

  1. Place each section in its own zone, for example with one Single article module per question.
  2. Open the published page in your browser, right-click the section, then choose Inspect.
  3. In the code shown, find the div element that wraps the section and whose class starts with zone-, then copy the value of its id attribute.
  4. In the editor, create a URL link to # followed by this identifier. If the section is on another page, add #identifier at the end of that page's address.

Identifiers added directly in the text of an article are not kept when you save. Always target the identifier of the zone.

Edit the HTML code

The Source button shows the HTML code generated by the editor. Use it to fix stubborn formatting or to paste an embed code (video, form, map). Click Source again to return to the normal view before saving.

To embed external content in a page (video, photo album, form), preferably use the Custom content module.
