How to import bounced and unsubscribed contacts into the new Yapla Newsletters

If you'd like to sign up for our new Newsletters functionality and you already have a well-defined contact directory with segments, lists, subscribers or invalid addresses, you'll need to perform some configuration work to reprogram your newsletter mailings. In this article, we'll show you how to import unsubscribed and bounced contacts into the Yapla Newsletters functionality.

Once you've activated the new Newsletters, you'll find two newletters tabs. The Newsletters tab contains all the new newsletter functionalities.

By activating the new Newsletters feature, your contacts will be automatically synchronized with the old Newsletters. However, some contacts will need to be reconfigured:

  • Your unsubscribed contacts will be imported without their unsubscribed status.
  • Contacts with invalid addresses (bounced) may be imported as valid contacts. For this reason, you'll need to perform a special operation when you sign up for the new Newsletters to reclassify your contacts under the correct sending parameters.

To find your unsubscribed contacts and existing bounced

  1. Go to the old Newsletters and select the Contacts tab.
  2. Select Show unsubscriber, then export them in Excel format by clicking on the Export contacts button on the left.

Then repeat step 2, selecting Show bounce and exporting the file as well.

Creating Attributes in the New Newsletters Feature

  1. In the new Newsletter, go to the Contacts tab.
  2. Choose the appropriate contact list, then click on the gear icon.
  3. Create a new attribute, name it "unsubscribe", and save it Screenshot 2025-02-06 at 3.56.18 PM.png
  4. Open the Excel file of previously exported unsubscribed contacts and delete all columns except for the e-mail.
  5. Add a column named "unsubscribe" and enter "yes" for all e-mails in this column.Screenshot 2025-02-06 at 3.57.47 PM.png

Importing the List of Unsubscribed Contacts

  1. Go to the Newsletters tab and then to the Contacts tab.
  2. On the left column, if you have multiple lists, select the desired list.
  3. Click the (+) icon in the upper right corner, then click Import Contacts.
  4. Select the "Existing" option and click Continue.

⚠️ It is important not to import your contacts using the "Add a new one" option since the number of contacts is counted based on the total contacts in each list, regardless of whether the same contact appears in multiple lists.

  1. Select the option Paste from a spreadsheet.
  2. Select all data in your spreadsheet, copy it, and paste it into the table. Click Next.
  3. In the next step, you can review the data. Ensure that the first column field indicates "email" (you can select the field by clicking the arrow on the right), and that the second column contains the "unsubscribe" field. Click Continue. Screenshot 2025-02-06 at 4.01.02 PM.png
  4. Confirm that you have permission to send e-mails to these contacts. You will be redirected to your contact list.

Creating a Segment

  1. In the left menu of your contact list, select Create a segment
  2. Name the segment "To Unsubscribe".
  3. In the Select Condition field, choose your attribute "unsubscribe", in the next row select "Is" and in the last row, "Yes".
  4. Click Save and Exit.

By filtering your contact list with the newly created "To Unsubscribe" filter, you will get a list of your unsubscribed contacts. Their status will still be marked as "Active". You must change this status to unsubscribe them.

    1. Select all contacts from the list, click on Action at the bottom, and choose Unsubscribe.

Your contacts now have the status "Unsubscribed".

⚠️ Please note that, for example, if displaying 100 contacts per page gives you a total of 6 pages, you will need to repeat the previous step for all 6 pages (i.e., select all contacts and then unsubscribe them on each page).

About "Bounced" Contacts

For the same contact list, you must repeat the entire procedure and name your new attribute according to the imported file, such as "bounced" for example.

⚠️ It is possible that contacts imported from the bounced list are automatically recognized as invalid upon import. They will therefore not be imported. The other contacts in this list will need to be unsubscribed manually.

Good to Know

It is important to repeat the entire import process (import of unsubscribed contacts and bounced contacts) for each contact list you have. For example, if you send bilingual newsletters, you may have separate lists for each supported language.

If you encounter any issues while importing your contacts or need further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact our support team at support@yapla.com.
