# Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

## Help your website appear in Google and be cited by AI assistants, at the website, page and article levels.

**Available with the Essentials plan and higher.**

Search optimization covers the practices that help your website appear in Google results (SEO) and be cited by AI assistants such as ChatGPT or Claude (GEO). Your Yapla website already includes the technical tools you need. What remains is deciding what to say, to whom, and how you want to be found.

Yapla organizes search optimization on three levels: the website, the pages and the articles.

### Website SEO

Go to **Website**, open your website, then click the **SEO** tile. The information entered here applies to the whole website.

- **Suffix - Title**: text added at the end of the title of all your pages, for example your organization's name. Add a separator (- or |) for readability in search results.
- **Keywords**: terms that describe your organization and its activities.
- **Image shared on social networks**: image displayed when someone shares your website's link, for example on Facebook. You can crop it to 16:9, 4:3 or 1:1.
- **Description**: a summary of your organization of about 150 to 160 characters. Use the vocabulary of your field.
- **Indexing**: check **Do not index this site** only if you want search engines to ignore it, for example while it is under construction.
- **Structured data**: the **Breadcrumb** adds tags to the page code that help Google understand the structure of the website. See [Display a breadcrumb](https://support.yapla.com/en-ca/add-a-menu-on-my-website#breadcrumb).

For the image shared on social media, plan 1200 × 630 px, in JPG or PNG format, ideally under 300 KB.

### Sitemap, robots.txt and llms.txt

In the same **SEO** tile, you can upload three technical files:

- **Sitemap**: an XML file listing your website's pages so search engines find them all. See [Add a sitemap to your website](https://support.yapla.com/en-ca/add-a-sitemap-to-your-website-seo?hsLang=en-ca).
- **robots.txt**: a text file that tells search engines which pages to crawl and which to ignore, for example members-only pages.
- **llms.txt**: a text file that describes your website to AI assistants. It tells them which content to understand and cite, so your organization is presented accurately when someone asks an AI rather than Google.

An llms.txt file is a plain text file written in Markdown. It usually starts with your organization's name and a short description, then lists your most important pages with their address and one sentence describing each.

### Page SEO

In the **Pages** tile, open a page, then the **SEO** tab:

- **Page title tag**: title displayed in the browser tab and in blue in Google results. It can be more complete than the page name and include your keywords. Aim for 50 to 60 characters.
- **Description**: text displayed under the link in search results. It does not affect your ranking, but it makes people want to click. Aim for 150 to 160 characters, with a different description for each page. Google may rewrite it.
- **Image shared on social networks**: replaces, for this page, the image set for the website.
- **Canonical URL**: indicates the official address of the page when the same content exists at several addresses. This avoids duplicate content.

### Article SEO

In **Website \> Articles**, open an article. The **Search Engine Optimization (SEO)** section appears at the bottom of the form once the article is saved:

- **Article - Title (title tag)**: title displayed in search results. Include your important keywords.
- **URL identifier**: the part of the address that identifies the article. Keep it simple and readable. Changing it after publication can create duplicate content.
- **Description**: a summary of the article for search engines.
- **Image**: image used when the article is shared on social networks.
- **Canonical link**: fill it in if the article appears at several addresses on your website.
- **Keywords**: simple, common terms your audience is likely to search for.

### Frequently asked questions

#### Why isn't my website showing up on Google?

Most often, search engines have not discovered it yet. To speed things up:

- make sure **Do not index this site** is unchecked in the SEO tile;
- make sure your home page is not set as the 404 error page;
- add a sitemap and submit it in Google Search Console;
- share your website's link on social media and in your newsletters to create inbound links;
- be patient: a new website can take several days or even a few weeks to appear.
