# Personalize your newsletters with merge tags

Merge tags personalize your newsletters by inserting information specific to each recipient, such as their first name. When the email is sent, each tag is replaced with the value stored for the contact: “Hello \[firstname\]” becomes “Hello Julie” for Julie and “Hello Mark” for Mark.

Your Yapla contacts' information (first name, last name, language, member number, etc.) is sent to Yapla Newsletters by [automatic sync](https://support.yapla.com/en-ca/automatic-contact-sync-to-yapla-newsletters?hsLang=en-ca) and becomes attributes you can use as tags.

### Insert a merge tag in an email

1. Go to **Campaigns \> Emails**, open the campaign, then click **Edit email**.
2. Click inside a text block, such as a paragraph, where the tag should appear.
3. In the block's toolbar, click **Merge tags**.

1. In the **Select a merge tag** window, find the tag you need. Use the search bar if needed. Your contacts' attributes appear as *Custom Attribute : attribute name*.
2. Click **Select** to the right of the tag.

The tag is inserted in the text with a dotted outline. The attributes offered are those of the list selected for the campaign.

If a contact has no value for the attribute, the tag is replaced with nothing. For example, “Hello \[firstname\],” will display as “Hello ,”. Make sure your contacts have this information, or word the sentence so it still reads well without the value.

### Available tags

The **Select a merge tag** window lists your contacts' attributes and information about the sender, your organization and the list. Here are the most used ones:

| Contact's first name | Custom Attribute : firstname | `[firstname]` |
| Contact's last name | Custom Attribute : lastname | `[lastname]` |
| Member number | Custom Attribute : numero\_de\_membre | `[numero_de_membre]` |
| Sender name | Sender name | `[SENDER_NAME]` |
| Sender email address | Sender email | `[SENDER_EMAIL]` |
| Your organization's name | Company name | `[CLIENTS.COMPANY_NAME]` |
| Your organization's address | Full address | `[CLIENTS.ADDRESS]` |
| Your organization's website | Clients Website | `[CLIENTS.WEBSITE]` |
| Your organization's phone number | Clients phone | `[CLIENTS.PHONE]` |
| List name | List name | `[LISTNAME]` |

The available attributes depend on the fields in your Yapla account. To see the full list, check the merge tag window or the **Manage lists and attributes** page (see below).

### Write a tag manually

A tag is the attribute name in square brackets, for example `[firstname]`. You can type it directly in an **HTML** block, or in a link, for example `https://www.myorganization.org/register?member=[numero_de_membre]`.

The name must be written exactly as in the **Attribute name** column of the **Manage lists and attributes** page, with the same upper and lower case. Otherwise, the tag will appear as is in the email.

### An attribute doesn’t appear in the list of tags

If one of your contacts' attributes isn't in the **Select a merge tag** window, make it visible:

1. Go to **Audience \> Contacts** and click the gear icon at the top right of the contact list. The **Manage lists and attributes** page opens.
2. Under **Choose a list to manage**, select the list used for the campaign, then open the **Attributes** tab.
3. In the attribute's **Visibility** column, replace *Hidden* with *Visible*.
4. Click **Close** at the top right, then reopen the email editor: the attribute now appears in the list of tags.

A *Visible* attribute also appears in the preference center, the page where your subscribers manage their subscription from the link at the bottom of your emails. The **Display name** is the label shown there.
