[Website personalization](https://support.yapla.com/en-ca/create-my-website?hsLang=en-ca#website-personalization) # How master pages work ## Turn on the master page system, set up the header, menu and footer once, then base all your pages on this shared structure. **Available with the Essentials plan and higher.** A master page gathers the elements repeated on every page of your website: the header, the menu, the footer and the main content zones. In **Website**, open your website, then click the **Parameters** tile. 2. Under **Advanced configuration**, turn on the **Master page system**, then click **Save**. Turning it on is permanent: the master page system cannot be turned off afterwards. The **Master pages** tile then appears in your website. It contains a first master page named **Base**. ### Set up the master page 1. Click the **Master pages** tile, then open the **Base** master page. **Add a Master Page** creates another one if needed. 2. In the **Structure** tab, click **Edit page structure** to organize the lines: add or remove lines, or split a line into columns (100%, 50/50, 33/66, etc.). Each line has an editable name that helps you find your way. 3. Go back to the **Structure** tab and click a zone to place a module in it: for example the [Header](https://support.yapla.com/en-ca/header?hsLang=en-ca) module on the first line, the Menu module below it and the Footer module on the last line. 4. Click **Save**. The modes of the **Structure** tab (**Module management**, **Moving modules** and **Grouping of lines**) work as on a regular page. The other tabs of the master page also serve every page based on it: **Configuration** (page name and CSS class), **SEO** and **Customization**. The page then uses the structure, header, menu and footer defined in the master page. In the page, the zones already set up in the master page show its content. To replace this content on a single page, open the zone and check **Personalize this zone**. To link it to another master page, create a new page. ### Best practices - **One master page:** use a single master page for the whole website whenever possible. Several master pages make setup and design much harder to maintain. - **Set up before the pages:** prepare the master page from the start, before working on your pages. Each new page then starts from a complete structure. - **Plan content lines:** add several content lines in the master page. An empty line does not show on the website, so each page is free to use only the lines it needs. Do not delete a line from the master page to remove it from a single page. Deleting it also erases the content of this line on every page of the website.
