# Creating segments for your newsletters

## Send a newsletter only to the contacts it concerns. You can target them by their Yapla groups or by whether they opened or clicked your emails.

When you send a newsletter, you can decide which members or groups of members it is intended for. You can define segments, that is, a specific set of contacts. You can create these segments from the groups defined in Yapla.

Go to **Configuration \> Groups**. You will find the list of all your groups (custom groups and system groups). These groups are automatically synced to Yapla Newsletters as tags. You can create sending segments from these tags.

### Create a segment in Yapla Newsletters from Yapla groups

1. In Yapla Newsletters, go to **Audience \> Contacts**.
2. In the left-hand column, click **Create segment**.

1. Name your segment, then select the contact list in which you want to create it.
2. Under *Conditions*, select “Tags” in the first row, “Has” in the second row, then the group you want in the third row.
3. Click **Save and exit**.

The list on the right of the creation screen shows, in real time, the number of contacts that match your conditions. Add more criteria with **+ Condition**.

### Segment by contact engagement

Available with the Yapla Newsletters Growth plan.

You can also create a segment based on what your contacts do with your emails. For example, target your most active readers or follow up with those who no longer open your newsletters.

Under *Conditions*, three options relate to engagement:

- **Email activity:** contacts who were sent, opened or clicked a specific campaign (*Was sent*, *Opened*, *Clicked*), or the opposite (*was not sent*, *did not open*, *did not click*). Then choose the campaign in the **Campaigns** menu.
- **Email activity (Time Period):** the same choices, but over a period of time rather than for a specific campaign. For example, contacts who opened an email in the last 3 months. Enter the number and the unit: days, weeks, months or years.
- **Link activity:** contacts who clicked or did not click a specific link. Choose the campaign in the **Campaigns** menu, then the link in the **Links** menu.

For example, to target contacts who haven't opened any email in 6 months:

1. Go to **Audience \> Contacts**, then click **Create segment**.
2. Name the segment, for example *Inactive for 6 months*, then choose the contact list.
3. Under *Conditions*, choose **Email activity (Time Period)**, then **did not open**.
4. Enter *6* and choose *months*.
5. Click **Save and exit**.

This condition also offers other choices, such as *Bounced*, *Unsubscribed* or *Engaged*.

Combine engagement with other criteria, such as a tag, by adding a condition with **+ Condition**. A segment of inactive contacts lets you send them a re-engagement campaign before removing them from your mailings, which helps your newsletters' deliverability.

### Delete a segment

Go to **Audience \> Segments**. In the *Manage segments* window, select the contact list your segment belongs to, then click **Delete** to the right of the segment. **Edit** opens the segment so you can change its conditions.

You can also open this window from **Audience \> Contacts**: in the *All contacts* drop-down menu in the left-hand column, click **VIEW ALL SEGMENTS**.

#### Is there a maximum number of segments we can create and/or select in our mailings?

There is no limit on segments: you can create as many as you want.
