# Create discount codes for your events

Discount codes allow you to offer your participants a discount on their registration fee. A code can be used unlimited times. Only visitors who know this code can use it. This is an offer that you can set up as part of a partnership with another organization or association, for example, or when you want to give away free tickets to participants of an event.

### Create a discount code

1. To create discount codes, open the relevant event.
2. Then click on the *Rates* tile.
3. In the menu of the displayed page, select *Discount Codes*, then click on *Add a discount code* in the lower right corner.

4. In the *Code* field, enter the code you will distribute. It must contain between 5 and 10 characters (avoid codes that are too easy to guess).
5. In the *Amount* field, enter the discount amount (if the discount exceeds the rate, the registration cost drops to $0).
6. Enable a quantity limit if you do not want your code to be used indefinitely (option available from the Plus offer).
7. Finally, in the *Accounting Code* field, if you use the *Accounting* feature, select the [accounting code](https://support.yapla.com/hc/en-ca/articles/360060428493?hsLang=en-ca) associated with your discounts.
8. When you are finished, click *Save* to keep your changes. Codes will remain active until registrations close.

### Apply the discount to one or more rates

Once the discount code has been created, you must apply the discount to event rates.

1. To activate and apply the discount code to one or more rates, open the *Rates* tile.
2. Select the rate of your choice. Scroll down the page and in the *Proposed Discount Code Prices* section, check the *Active* box to activate the discount for this rate.

### Add a limit to discount codes (Plus Plan)

When you create discount codes for your events, they can be used indefinitely by anyone who knows the code. However, if your event has a large number of registrations, you may want to limit their use.

#### Enable the limit on a code

The usage limit applies to each code.

1. In the discount code settings, check the *Limit available quantity* option, then enter the desired number of uses.

1. Then apply your discount code to one or more rates. Each time a user redeems the code, the remaining quantity will be updated in the list of discount codes.

#### How it works on the website

The discount code will be available for all rates where it is activated. When the limit is reached, if the code is used, an error will be displayed.

### How it works in administration

As with other limits, the discount code can still be used in the administration panel, even when its limit has been reached.
